On greeting a young woman I know, I asked her: “How are you! What’s new in your life?!” She smiled and hugged me, and said “I’m OK… You know, same old, same old.” I gently teased her… “NO! NO! NO! Such a response! Especially from one so young. Honey… you have to have some fun!” She laughed and said “I know!”
This exchange made me think of how easily we can succumb to the mundane… life moves so fast. While a certain amount of structure and routine in our lives gives us a degree of security and comfort… enough is enough! Complacency can make for such a dull life. We humans need to look forward to things… to anticipate experiences of pleasure and delight… where our senses and emotions are fully engaged. We need connection to other humans and an exchange of ideas… intimate interaction… laughter… exposure to the unique and the new.
The world is turning… everything is fluid… constantly changing… beauty unfolding… EVERYDAY! I’m amazed at the sheer awesomeness of this planet and how precious the people. I don’t want to miss a thing! I want to be present and aware. I want to build little mini adventures and explorations into my life all the time… be it through a book, a conversation, a play, a movie, a trip, or even in my own backyard. I want to really see, really think, really feel. I want to make time for all the people in my life and for new experiences. What was that line in that old movie?…. “I’ve got things I want to do, places to go, people to meet!” I’m making my list! How about you?
